SEQUIM — A search for a Sequim man overdue to return from a camping trip in the Olympic National Forest was suspended Thursday evening without finding him.
Stephen Mason, 52, was last seen June 23 at a campsite near the Dungeness campground off Palo Alto Road, according to a statement from the Clallam Count County Sheriff’s Department.
Mason’s family contacted the department Thursday to report that Mason was overdue from the trip, the statement said.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue scoured a rugged, two miles stretch of terrain on the upper Dungeness River where Mason may have hiked or panned for gold, a statement from the department said.
“When they say ‘rugged,’ you can underline ‘rugged,”‘ Clallam County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Benedict said Saturday.
