SEQUIM — Gates have been installed on major roads leading to state land on Burnt Hill, a popular recreation area severely damaged by off-road vehicles.
But officials with the state Department of Natural Resources say a decision is still pending on whether to close the roads to motorized use.
Members of a DNR focus group on Burnt Hill activity will discuss the situation at their monthly meeting tonight at 7 in the Sequim Community Center, 190 W. Cedar St.
Jody Rooney, the president of Olympic Trailblazers off-road-vehicle club, said Wednesday that he expects dozens of interested people to attend.
DNR officials installed the two new gates following extensive damage to Burnt Hill meadows and wetlands during a four-wheel drive gathering on the weekend of April 10. One other road leading from Johnson Creek Road south of Sequim was already gated.
