The state Department of Natural Resources is burning slash on its lands on parts of the North Olympic Peninsula.
DNR began burning in the Foothills area south of Port Angeles on Wednesday. More piles will be burned on Monday, weather permitting, said Mike Cronin, Crescent District Manager for DNR’s Olympic Region.
Slash piles in different areas will be burned during November, Cronin said. A similar slash pile burn was conducted in the Sequim area last week.
The slash piles are left over from the past year’s timber sales. The burning is being done to reduce fire hazards and improve reforestation, Cronin said.
A lot of private landowners also are conducting slash burns, but for land-clearing purposes, he said.
