PORT ANGELES — Santa Claus was a little late making his way to the Port Angeles Downtown Association’s Christmas tree lighting Saturday evening, but most braved the cold and a slight breeze to catch a glimpse of old Saint Nick.
Hundreds showed up for the downtown tradition that for many marks the beginning of the Christmas season.
But for some, the tree lighting is a new custom.
Tom and Carrie Sanford of Port Angeles brought their daughter, Abby, out for her first Christmas.
“Having a little one is an excuse to come see the lights,” Tom said.
“We’re starting a new tradition,” Carrie said.
Entertainment provided
Entertainment was provided by the Hamilton Elementary School Choir, the Sunshine Generation of Fairview Elementary and Northwinds Home School Band.
In between songs, cookies and warm beverages, announcers provided updates on Santa’s location.
Meanwhile Santa’s elves, dressed in knickers and pointy hats, moved through the crowd, handing out candy canes.
“We’re not deciding who’s been naughty or nice,” said Garrett Lumens, a senior at Port Angeles High School and member of Key Club.
“That’s up to Santa.”
