RV burns; cause of fire undetermined

PORT ANGELES — Firefighters with Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue knocked down an RV fire that threatened a structure as well as propane tanks.

No one was reported injured in the fire at 2105 W. U.S. Highway 101 — the site of the old Clallam County Humane Society — which was reported to firefighters at 9:29 p.m. Wednesday.

The RV was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived and was beginning to spread to the main building about 10 feet away, as well as to a nearby shed with combustible material.

The occupant of the RV, who was not in the structure when firefighters arrived, said that several propane cylinders were inside the RV and had just been filled.

He left, and firefighters have not been able to contact him since, according to Chief Jake Patterson.

Because they cannot speak with him, investigators cannot determine the cause of the fire, Patterson said.

“Due to the extensive damage to the RV and inability to interview the occupant, the cause of the fire is still undetermined,” Patterson said.

Fire crews knocked down the flames and prevented the fire from spreading any further, the chief said.

The RV was completely destroyed, firefighters said. The roof and siding of the shed closest to the fire were slightly damaged, Patterson said.

The main structure on the property was not damaged.

“We attacked the fire from a distance until everything was cooled down enough to approach and the risk of any additional explosion decreased,” Patterson said.

While the fire was being put out, westbound Highway 101 was blocked off, with Elwha Police directing traffic.

“We are no longer conducting an investigation into the fire due to lack of contact and the severe damage to the RV,” Patterson said.

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue responded with two fire engines and three command vehicles. Twenty fire district personnel responded to the incident as well as Elwha Police.
