Ribbon-cutting for Mountain View Dog Park set for Friday

Port Townsend off-leash area features new fencing

PORT TOWNSEND — A ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony for the Mountain View Dog Park will be held at 4 p.m. Friday.

The off-leash park is at 1925 Blaine St.

The city’s parks and recreation department recently installed fencing at the property between the pool and The ReCyclery at the Mountain View Commons.

There are two large areas for dogs that will be rotated to allow the grass to recover, plus a smaller area.

Community members formed a nonprofit called Dog Recreation on the Peninsula (DROP) about four years ago to advocate for an off-leash park as the city revised its leash laws.

Debbie Jahnke, the chair of the city’s parks, recreation and trees advisory board, has been part of DROP along with her husband, Rick, and pushed for an option larger than the Chetzemoka Dog Park.

Rick is the president of DROP, and Port Townsend City Council member Bob Gray serves as vice president.

All three will be at Friday’s ceremony in addition to Mayor Deborah Stinson, interim City Manager Nora Mitchell and city staff members.
