PORT TOWNSEND — U.S. Sen. Patty Murray visited Port Townsend afternoon to speak at a fund-raiser for the Jefferson County Democratic Party at Fort Worden State Park.
According to organizers, 220 people paid $25 apiece to get a chance to see Murray while sipping lemonade and sampling hors d’ouvres in the upstairs room of a newly renovated building on the park grounds. Murray commented during a brief speech on being at the fort during its 100th anniversary year.
But her purpose was to rally party members to get involved in next fall’s election.
“The state of Washington is at a crossroads,” Murray said. “We have the second-highest rate of unemployment, after Oregon, and the second-worst traffic problem in the nation.”
Murray said Washington voters have passed initiative after intiative saying they want to keep their money and spend it the way they want.
“We have to turn that around,” Murray said. “We must invest in this state or there won’t be a great state of Washington.”
