Port Townsend School Board selects superintendent

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend School Board will offer the superintendent’s position to Dr. David Engle of Lawrenceville, N.J., who most recently supervised a school district in North Platte, Neb.

Engle was one of four finalists who participated in an extensive interview session this week, in which each candidate spent a day in the district meeting with staff, teachers, students and the public.

“The thing the stood out for me was his sense of vision,” said School Board President Jennifer James-Wilson after the announcement was made this afternoon.

“I was drawn to his lifelong sense of social justice and believe that he will help us deliver education to every student who passes through our doors,” she said.

The new superintendent is to start in July, following the departure of Gene Laes after two years as superintendent.

James-Wilson called Engle, who holds a doctorate, right after the vote was taken today to inform him of the board’s decision.

The salary will be negotiated.

The other finalists were Mellody Matthes, assistant superintendent position in the Tukwila School District; John R. Alberghini of Waterbury Center, Vt., who is the superintendent of Chittenden East Supervisory Union in Richmond, Vt.; and Ellen Perconti of Clarkston, the director of curriculum and assessment in the Lewiston (Idaho) Independent School District.
