PORT TOWNSEND — Thursday’s literal groundbreaking for the Child and Family Resource Center can also be considered a symbolic groundbreaking for Jefferson County.
The center will provide services and facilities for many different organizations.
From law enforcement to education, the resource center will fill the need for a safe, neutral environment to interview children about traumatic experiences, reunite families, provide day treatment for disturbed youth and offer parenting classes.
The $465,000 center will be operational by the end of the year.
Most of the funding came from Washington state, which awarded Jefferson County a $450,000 Community Development Block Grant a year ago February.
The building will be located next door to the existing center at 884 W. Park St.
The center will bring to fruition an idea hatched five years ago by Pat Range, director of Learning Support Services for the Port Townsend School District, and Kris Lenke, director of Special Services for the Chimacum School District.
