PORT TOWNSEND — In 2002, Fort Worden celebrated its centennial with fireworks, concerts and reunions of those who worked and served on the former army post turned youth rehabilitation center, now a state park.
On Saturday, the fort, which has served as Port Townsend’s economic buttress for 100 years, is inviting the community to celebrate its future.
“We’ve issued an open public invitation,” said Kate Burke, park manager.
Kees Kolff, mayor of Port Townsend and Rex Derr, director of Washington State Parks, will host a ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday to open the park’s newest addition, Fort Worden Commons.
Built at a cost of $6 million, the multipurpose hall replaces a World War II-era dining hall that limited the size of conferences the park could book.
