PORT TOWNSEND — A benefit to support additional math instruction for Port Townsend High School students raised enough money Tuesday night to fund scholarships for six students for the remainder of the school year.
“This was a great event,” said tutor Jonathan Safir.
“We had a full house, and the whole community came out to support the endeavor.”
Safir declined to provide any specific numbers about the money raised, but more than 120 people paid $10 for a spaghetti dinner and an evening of entertainment at the Upstage Theatre and Restaurant in Port Townsend.
The benefit was organized by students who will directly benefit from the BrainStorm in PT program, which was created by Port Townsend High students.
Additional donations also were accepted on-site.
Safir said he plans to “give the students a week or two to catch their breath” but expects to begin planning another fundraising event in April.
Safir said he hopes to expand the program to include other areas besides math, using the tutoring model to help students become competitive in a variety of subjects.
