Port Angeles, Sequim see snowfall

Several inches in some areas while east and west ends largely dry

PORT ANGELES — Large snowflakes wafted down over Port Angeles and Sequim on Monday morning, building up to several inches at higher elevations and as much as 2.5 inches in Sequim.

Sequim School District was delayed by two hours and buses operated on snow routes.

More than an inch fell west of Port Angeles at the Elwha River north of Lower Dam Road.

The sun was out by noon in Port Angeles.

About 2.5 inches fell in the Sequim area, according to precipitation observers with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (www.cocorahs.org).

“There are a few snow showers around, but it’s not enough to panic,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike McFarland said Monday morning.

“The showers will peter out, the sun will come out and it should be mostly clear [Monday night], with lows in the upper 20s and mid-30s.

“We don’t have any Canadian air pouring down or anything.”

Roadways in Port Angeles remained largely clear downtown while several inches built up in some higher elevations.

The snow showers were confined to Port Angeles and Sequim, and possibly Diamond Point in Clallam County, McFarland said.

Forks and the West End were snowless, as was Port Townsend, but South Jefferson County saw some light accumulation.

Heavy rains are possible for Western Washington beginning tonight and continuing into Friday, with temperatures ranging from the upper 30s to low 40s, according to the National Weather Service.

Three to 5 inches could fall along the coast and up to 6 inches along the western slopes of the Olympics.
