PORT ANGELES — An updated study of a potential barge dock operated by the Port of Port Angeles should be ready by September despite uncertainty over whether the city would use the landing to haul garbage after its dump closes.
Port commissioners have approved $25,000 for consultants BST Associates to update an old barge facility study. The update should take three months.
Commissioner Bill Hannan said the Port needs to consider barging as a possibility to move goods on and off the North Olympic Peninsula when the Hood Canal Bridge is closed for repairs in 2006.
The eastern half of the floating bridge will be replaced, and the lifeline between the North Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas will be closed for eight weeks beginning in May of that year.
Commissioner Glenn Beckman said building a barge facility is one of the most important tasks the Port can do because its uses are so great and potential customers are numerous.
