PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man accused of trying to kidnap a 6-year-old boy from Hollywood Beach in June has been deemed incompetent to stand trial and will undergo restorative treatment.
During a Thursday hearing, Clallam County Superior Court Judge George Wood ordered that Arthur Delfield Crall, 56, undergo treatment designed to restore his competency at Western State Hospital in Lakewood.
A mental evaluation ordered July 9 found that Crall lacks the capacity to understand the court proceedings against him and the ability to assist in his own defense, according to court documents.
Crall has been charged with one count each of second-degree attempted kidnapping and second-degree assault.
Crall, described in documents as a transient living in Port Angeles, remained in jail Saturday on $35,000 bail.
Wood set a hearing Aug. 29 to review the results of the treatment.
Police said Crall pushed a man down on Hollywood Beach at about 7 p.m. June 22 and tried repeatedly to grab the man’s 6-year-old son.
The father pushed Crall into the water and called 9-1-1, police said.
Crall later told police he was trying to take the boy “back to his mother.”
He told police he did not know the boy.
