Erling “Bub” Olsen has been reading his Boy Scout handbook and brushing up on merit badge requirements.
Like many boys, he’s ascended the ranks from Tenderfoot to Life and is now ready for his Eagle Scout award.
But as he undergoes his Eagle board of review Saturday, Olsen, 84, will be recalling skills and information he learned three generations ago as a young scout in Poulsbo.
It’s been almost 70 years since Olsen, a sharp-minded Port Angeles man who cooks a mean almond brittle, served loaves of homemade bread on a Depression-era bread line as his final project in preparation for the highest honor a Boy Scout can earn.
A tragic event kept Olsen and another boy in Troop 571 from receiving their Eagle Scout awards as teenagers, but a turn in Olsen’s health last year renewed his interest in finally getting the award.
On Saturday, Olsen will undergo his Eagle board of review in Port Angeles, the final step a Scout must endure before receiving his Eagle.
