SEQUIM — It was a perfect day for the hard-core runners at the 23rd annual Sequim Runoff road race on Saturday morning at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse.
It was cold.
A stiff breeze and very little sun kept most competitors and spectators huddled in their cars until just before race time at 10:30.
But it was the kind of cool weather you appreciate if you plan on a hard, sweat running down the temples and the crack of your back workout. And quite a few of the several hundred runners were there for that type of exercise.
Both the two-mile and 10-kilometer (seven-mile) races brought about the kind of competition you don’t expect to see at this level: the small-town “fun” run.
But there were at least three world-class athletes in attendance and many more who made this 23rd edition so spectacular. It all started with the innocent two-mile competition, which is usually reserved for the beginning runners who have finally worked up the nerve to give road racing a try.
