PORT ANGELES — If all goes well, Peninsula College will offer a four-year degree program in applied science management starting in the fall of 2007.
The state Board of Community and Technical Colleges approved Peninsula College’s application last week, along with three other two-year colleges, to offer bachelor of applied science degrees in addition to its two-year associate degrees.
The applied science management degrees will be different than those given out by traditional four-year liberal arts institutions, and will be centered around a more hands-on and work-related program.
“The applied bachelor’s degrees in general are a way to bring bachelor’s degrees to communities where they aren’t offered,” said Suzy Ames of the state Board of Community and Technical Colleges.
The Legislature decided to go forward with the applied bachelor degree program in October because of a projected 22,000-seat shortage in four-year degree programs at state colleges by the year 2010.
Applications for two-year colleges wanting to take part in the program were narrowed down from six.
The other three chosen were Bellevue Community College, Olympic College in Bremerton and South Seattle Community College.
