Oscar-winning actor to return to scene of his 1982 triumph

PORT TOWNSEND — Actor Louis Gossett Jr. will return to Fort Worden State Park on Friday to film interviews in some of the locations of scenes in “An Officer and a Gentleman” for a 25th anniversary special-edition release of the 1982 film.

Tim King, owner of King Media Services, based in Manhattan Beach, Calif., said Wednesday that his company was hired to produce a series of documentaries that will be in a bonus feature section of the DVD.

The Paramount Home Entertainment release of the special DVD is likely to be in the first quarter of 2007, perhaps in March, said King.

“We’ve interviewed the entire cast in different locations throughout the world,” said King.

“Mr. Gossett agreed to come up to Port Townsend with us, which is quite magnificent.”

Gossett’s portrayal of the Marine drill sergeant Emil Foley, haranguing Richard Gere’s character Zack Mayo at “Fort Ranier,” won Gossett the Academy Award for best supporting actor in 1983.

The location setting for fictitious Fort Ranier — a military aviator training base that misspelled the mountain’s name — was Fort Worden State Park.

Other locations

Other Port Townsend locations for the blockbuster film, which also starred Debra Winger — who was guest of honor at the Port Townsend Film Festival in 2005 — included The Tides Inn motel, Town Tavern (now the Water Street Brewery and Ale House), and the city pool at Mountain View Elementary School.

King said he won’t know exactly what time or where the interview with Gossett will be shot until tonight, but some of the possible sites are well-known.
