NEWS BRIEFS: ‘Read to Feed’successful … and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — New Day Learning Academy students exceeded their reading campaign goals in the “Read to Feed” service project, raising $700 for Heifer International.

Heifer International is a relief organization that purchases farm animals to aid in reducing hunger and poverty, according to a news release.

The school was notified that a private Heifer International donor had matched the money raised by the school’s children.

The chicks will provide both food and a reliable income for economically disadvantaged families.

High-Readers awards went to kindergartner Vienna Stecker, who read more than 200 books during the month of March, and to kindergartner Josiah Godwin and preschooler Evelyn Godwin, who each read more than 100 books.

Students who raised the most money from their reading sponsors were Asher Ritter, Treston and Callie Windle, and Tyler and Levi Knoche.

The academy has provided educational services for area families for the past nine years.

Miss Fort Discovery

SEQUIM — Jordan McMinn has been named as Security Services Northwest Inc.’s (SSNW) 2018 Miss Fort Discovery pick.

McMinn debuted as Miss Fort Discovery during Unity of Effort on Aug. 11.

“I’m really fortunate for the opportunity to be Miss Fort Discovery and I am excited for what it has in store and for who I am able to meet, and to impact the community,” McMinn said in a news release.

McMinn was raised in Sequim and graduated with the Sequim High School Class of 2017.

During her school years she was active in student body government, played high school basketball and was a volunteer coach for youth basketball and soccer programs.

McMinn is preparing for her sophomore year at the University of Oregon, where she has been accepted into journalism school, according to the release.

Unity of Effort is a showcase and a celebration for emergency first responders, law enforcement and military personnel from local, state and federal levels.

The Miss Fort Discovery contest was started in 2014 by Fort Discovery, Inc. owner Joe D’Amico — who also owns Sequim-based SSNW — to find a spokesperson to help represent the company’s new “Expedition Rifle” and other firearms-related products, according to the release.
