OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK – With all the stress of cleaning up after the big storms in November and December, Olympic National Park officials can rest easy about at least one trouble spot.
The chalet at Enchanted Valley in West Jefferson County is no longer in danger of being swept away by the East Fork Quinault River.
The chalet, which predates the national park, was threatened in 2003 by the river, which had changed course.
At one point, the river was as close as 10 feet to the historical building.
Because moving the building by vehicle or helicopter was not permissible in a wilderness location, little could be done to protect the structure, said Barb Maynes, Olympic National Park spokeswoman.
“It was one of those situations where we wanted to preserve the history, but we were limited legally because of the wilderness location,” Maynes said
