CHIMACUM — More traffic and fewer trees in Port Townsend could be the direct result of repairs to the Hood Canal Bridge in 2006.
John Callahan, Washington State Department of Transportation assistant project manager, discussed the multimillion-dollar project to replace the eastern half of the floating bridge at a meeting of the Port of Port Townsend.
The Transportation Department has been devising strategies for handling tourism and transporting traffic during the two-month bridge closure in the spring of 2006.
The most likely scenario is to have eight additional ferry runs per day into Port Townsend from Edmonds and Kingston, he said.
That would require a holding area much larger now at the Port Townsend ferry landing.
Callahan told Port commissioners that an option is to cut down poplar trees along the south side of Sims Way near Kah Tai Lagoon so a four-lane ferry holding area can be built.
