Marine Thrift shop reopens today in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — Marine Thrift, the Northwest Maritime Center’s second-hand store for sailors, builders and do-it-yourselfers, is reopening today with a swap meet at its Port Townsend Boat Haven location.

Used hardware, tools, boat gear — and sometimes even small craft — beckon at the thrift outlet. Today’s swap meet happens from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the shop, whose official address is 315B Haines Place just inside the boatyard.

The maritime center invites everyone to visit, see the fresh changes in the place and say hello to the new Marine Thrift supervisor, Robert Brechlin.

Marine Thrift’s regular business hours will then be 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

The maritime center’s goal with this shop is to keep good gear out of the landfill and ensure that boating remains affordable and sustainable, said Joel Arrington, Northwest Maritime Center Boatshop Manager.

“So we’re excited,” he said, “to be able to provide this community resource again as we come out of the pandemic.”

Marine Thrift is one of many projects of the Northwest Maritime Center, the nonprofit organization headquartered at 431 Water St. in downtown Port Townsend.

Other activities include the Race to Alaska and Seventy48, nonmotorized events for rowers, paddlers and sailors this June.
