March set for Friday

PORT ANGELES — A march from the Vern Burton Community Center to downtown Port Angeles will highlight a Friday morning public event spotlighting violence against Native American women.

Organizers and participants will gather at the community center parking lot at 308 E. Fourth St. at 10 a.m. to make signs for the S’Klallam/Klallam Solidarity Walk for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, participant Cindy Lee Claplanhoo said.

Claplanhoo’s sister, Makah tribal member Valerie Claplanhoo, was murdered in January 2019 in a Sequim apartment. Her homicide, being investigated by the Sequim Police Department, remains unsolved.

Participants will march at 11 a.m. Friday from the Vern Burton parking lot to the Gateway Transit Center and will gather from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the nearby Elwha Heritage Center at 401 E. First St.
