PORT ANGELES — Ed Ebling of Sequim had the lucky duck. His was the 40th plucked out of the back of several pickup trucks Sunday afternoon during the 31st annual Duck Derby, and it was the winner of the 2020 Toyota Yaris donated as the grand prize by Dan Wilder Toyota.
The event, which took place in the staging area at the BMX track at Lincoln Park, raised more than $90,000 for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.
Wilder and Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict selected the winners out of the 20,649 ducks that were sold, said Bruce Skinner, executive director of the foundation.
As the event was broadcast live through the foundation’s Facebook page, Ebling, the manager at the Sequim Health and Rehabilitation Center, had only a few words of surprise over the phone: “Absolutely amazing.”
Instead of a race at the Lincoln Park pond, Wilder and Benedict plucked ducks from a row of eight Toyota trucks. With 40 total prizes, they started at the bottom and worked their way up to No. 1, which Wilder drew from the back end of the truck in the farthest corner.
Prizes ranged from $50 gift certificates to Peninsula-area restaurants and businesses and cash drawings at 7 Cedars Casino.
Green Crow Corporation of Port Angeles won the second-place prize, $1,000 in cash at 7 Cedars Casino, and Steve Methner of Port Angeles won the third-place prize, up to a five-night stay at the Inn at Otter Crest on the Oregon Coast.
