FORKS — Two elementary teachers and a special education assistant for the Quillayute Valley School District will be laid off next year.
With only three members present, the School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night for the layoffs, saving the school district about $122,000 next year.
Present for the vote were School Board Chairman Dave Dickson, Vice Chairman Rick Gale and board member Tina Bergstrom.
The district projects an enrollment decline of about 60 students next year, meaning the loss of about $265,000 in state and federal funds.
The layoffs, combined with other targeted cuts by Schools Superintendent Frank Walter and the district’s Budget Advisory Committee, are projected to save the district about $246,400 next year.
While the layoffs are the only confirmed cuts by the School Board, Walter and the Budget Advisory Committee are proposing to eliminate freshman sports, high school choir and elementary programs in science and social development.
The cuts will save the district an additional $107,500.
