PORT ANGELES — The usual storyline at this time of year has children waiting at home for a certain someone to show up bearing gifts.
On Thursday, however, it was the kids who brought the baskets of goodies — toys and treats for dogs and cats being sheltered and awaiting adoption at the Clallam County Humane Society.
About a dozen students from Olympic Christian School raised money to buy the treats over the last month.
Inspiration for the project came from Taylor Washburn, a Port Angeles 9-year-old who is president of his fourth-grade class and a volunteer at the animal shelter.
He’s been walking dogs there with his uncle, Bob Bish, since the summer, and developed a strong affinity for the homeless pets.
“I wanted to do something for the dogs here,” Taylor said.
“I thought, ‘Maybe I could get them some bones and stuff.’
“I just like animals and I felt like I could do something for them, and help the humane society, too.”
