KALA POINT — When asked if she wanted an opportunity to represent Jefferson County at the Republican National Convention, Anne Burkart said she jumped at the opportunity.
“I was approached by the John McCain National Committee and asked if I would be interested in campaigning for an alternate position,” Burkart said.
“I said, of course I would be.”
Burkart, a resident of Kala Point, was elected by a group of allocated delegates to serve as an alternate at the GOP convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., which begins on Sept. 1.
As an alternate, Burkart will attend the convention but will not step foot on the actual convention floor unless something happens to the allocated delegate she is an alternate for.
“If they are unable to go on the floor then they pass off their credentials to me,” Burkart said.
“The alternates go to the convention site on the days of the convention and are in an area not down on the floor, in case something changes.
“There are actually number of reasons to get the credentials — someone could not come, someone might get sick or they may just be feeling generous and pass them off so you can go down and participate.”
