JOYCE — People in the 500 homes and businesses served by the Crescent Water Association were urged today to boil their tap water.
A main break on Monday caused a water outage in Joyce, the state Department of Health said Tuesday.
The water association was working Tuesday to repair the break and restore water pressure, the state said.
Customers east of Miller Road are most affected by the loss of water pressure, but all are being advised to boil their tap water until the district can have the water quality tested.
When pressure is lost, potentially harmful bacteria can enter water lines.
To kill bacteria, the state recommends boiling tap water used for drinking, brushing teeth, dish washing, preparing food, and making ice.
Water should be boiled for one minute and allowed to cool before use.
Customers will be notified when the water is safe to drink.
