PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend and Olympic Community Action Programs begin a partnership today to coordinate volunteers.
OlyCAP’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program Director Michele Erickson will work out of City Manager David Timmons’ office on the second floor of the Waterman-Katz Building, 181 Quincy St.
Erickson will continue coordinating seniors for the social service agency but will also coordinate volunteers of all ages who want to help city government.
Port Townsend will provide the work station for Erickson, including a computer and telephone, in exchange for her services.
“We’re delighted to do it,” said Tim Hockett, OlyCAP deputy director. “We coordinate more than 1,100 volunteers each year, and we provide well over 100,000 hours of service to all sorts of nonprofits and public agencies.
“The office at Port Townsend is a real benefit and a demonstration of community support.”
Timmons said city staff had discussed the need to coordinate volunteers prompting Mayor Geoff Masci to approach OlyCAP about sharing space.
Masci is a member of the action programs’ board.
