PORT TOWNSEND — An idea rejected three years ago to expand administrative offices at the Jefferson County Courthouse could be revived on a far smaller scale.
County Commissioner Dan Titterness, R-Port Townsend, suggested putting the option back on the table in light of a worsening economy.
He said the county should consider constructing a 40,000-square-foot building in front of the courthouse.
The county has considered purchasing land, putting in utilities and building county facilities along Howard Street and Sims Way.
But an estimated price tag of $12.6 million could be too costly for the county.
“We own the land (at the courthouse), and the infrastructure exists,” Titterness said.
“The economics of using this location became apparent to me. It could be much cheaper than building on Howard Street.”
