PORT LUDLOW — People who came to an open house and barbecue at Mats Mats Quarry on Friday displayed none of the rancor that has previously characterized relations between quarry operators and residents.
So many people showed up — nearly 500 — that the caterer ran out of dinner plates, but even that didn’t dispel the general good mood.
Glacier Northwest General Manager Ron E. Summers said the only concern some folks had was whether the quarry was responsible for a loud blast last week.
“That wasn’t us,” he said. “We didn’t blast at all last week.”
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the explosion originated at the Shine Quarry south of Port Ludlow.
The picnic ambiance was in stark contrast to previous clashes between residents and quarry operators over noise, dust, blast vibrations and long-term plans for the basalt mine.
