CAPE GEORGE — Retired Seattle firefighter Zane Wyll was chosen Friday as an interim board member by Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 6 commissioners.
Commissioners Jack Tice Jr. and Grey Pohl selected Wyll from four candidates — Rich Stapf of Port Townsend and Rich Reid who lives on Discovery Road bowed out. That left former Jefferson County Commissioner Bob Hinton and Wyll, who both interviewed Thursday.
“It looked like they needed help. I”m a retired firefighter with 13 years of experience and I felt I could be of service,” Wyll said of his application.
Wyll said he doesn’t “have an axe to grind,” but voiced concern because the department currently has just 13 volunteers.
“Of course, you serve the taxpayers, not the volunteers. But it doesn’t have to be one or the other,” he said. “Your only asset is your firefighters. We have 13 and we need more. It’s pretty simple.”
