PORT TOWNSEND — Eight kittens were recently found on a rooftop, abandoned by their mother and starving to death.
They’re among the hundreds of wild cats which roam Jefferson County, fighting for territory and scavenging for food. The kittens were lucky they were found early enough to be domesticated.
Many others cats will always shy away from humans while scavenging from them.
Feral cats don’t cause much of a threat to humans as they fend for themselves, but they do mate and bring more cats into a harsh world.
Volunteers throughout Jefferson County are rounding up feral cats — one or two at a time — so veterinarians can spay or neuter them.
The Feral Cat Division of the Jefferson County Animal Services Auxiliary will trap wild cats for residents, but the volunteers stipulate that residents seeking assistance promise to continue caring for the cats.
