PORT TOWNSEND — Trees planted during the first Earth Day 31 years ago now tower over houses and buildings.
Children who may have helped plant them could now be college graduates.
Now, those grown children could help their children plant trees, pick up trash and prune plants during Saturday’s 31st annual Earth Day effort in Jefferson County.
This weekend, nearly 80 trees and dozens of perennials and annuals will be planted throughout Port Townsend. And Jefferson County offers free waste disposal at the transfer station for those organizations that have signed up to have fees waived.
Jefferson County community and environmental groups have been working on Earth Day tasks this month and continue efforts Saturday as communities across the country undertake recycling, planting and clean up efforts.
Port Townsend Mayor Geoff Masci will put his shoulder into planting a Golden Desert ash tree in front of the Day Star Cafe on Water Street on Saturday backing up his official proclamation encouraging Earth Day efforts.
Masci will help plant one of 76 trees donated by Puget Sound Energy at 11 a.m. Saturday.
