PORT TOWNSEND — With 38 percent of Jefferson County employees older than 50, county government could conceivably see a third of its work force leave in a decade.
The possible dilemma may be linked to an aging baby boomer population or perhaps tied to an older median age in Jefferson County.
It is also part of a trend seen around the state and nation.
The trend could mean a high turnover rate for county employees in about five years, officials acknowledge.
“It shows that Jefferson County has an aging employee base like many other counties do,” Deputy County Administrator Gary Rowe said Thursday. “I think we’ll see it in the next five or 10 years. We know we’re going to have more retirements.”
