Driver dies in collision at state Highway 104 and US 101

Second person flown to Harborview with serious injuries

PORT TOWNSEND — A driver died after a two-car, one-semi collision on state Highway 104 near the U.S. Highway 101 interchange on Monday.

The road was closed in both directions at about 10:20 a.m. and reopened about 6:19 p.m. Monday night, according to the state Department of Transportation.

While traveling on state Highway 104, a car crossed the center line and ran head-on into a dump truck, which was carrying a trailer full of sand near the U.S. Highway 101 interchange, Hodgson said.

A second car and driver then struck debris of the initial wreckage, Hodgson said.

The driver of the car that struck the dump truck died as a result of the collision, Hodgson said.

The driver of the dump truck was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries, Hodgson said. That person’s condition was unknown Monday afternoon.

The condition of the other car driver was unknown at 4:30 p.m., but they did not require significant medical treatment, Hodgson said.

Names of the drivers were unavailable Monday afternoon, as next of kin for the deceased had yet to be notified.

Crews were working as quickly and safely as they could to reopen the road Monday afternoon, Hodgson said. The state Department of Transportation set up a detour, guiding traffic to Center Road to avoid the area.
