Rain and wind arrived with a vengeance Sunday, reminding residents what it’s usually like to live in the Northwest in December.
High winds knocked out power to Lake Sutherland and the Port Angeles Boat Haven.
The storm also brought “major blizzards” to the Olympic Mountains and splashed waves onto highways.
U.S. Coast Guard Group Port Angeles reported a relatively “quiet day” because mariners avoided the high seas in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
But passengers reported a rough ride Sunday on the MV Coho ferry coming back to Port Angeles from Victoria, after a delay of about 20 minutes.
U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles was closed for about an hour after 3:45 p.m. Sunday while Clallam County Public Utility District workers removed a large Douglas fir knocked across the highway by the wind.
Lake Sutherland resident Dave Weikel said the tree took power lines with it in the fall.
This left Lake Sutherland residents without power for much of the afternoon and part of Sunday evening while utility workers scrambled to reinstall lines.
The tree fell about 100 yards west of the weigh station near Lake Sutherland, about 10 miles west of Port Angeles, said Weikel.
