High winds knock out power to areas of Clallam, Jefferson

PORT TOWNSEND — High winds created problems across the North Olympic Peninsula on Sunday, knocking down trees and cutting power to residents in the area.

The National Weather Service called for increasing southerly winds Sunday up to 40 mph, with gusts reaching as high as 60 mph.

Multiple reports of trees across roadways and power lines came in throughout the day.

Jefferson County Public Utility District reported on Twitter there were multiple outages across its system. Power was restored in the Gardiner area by 3 p.m. Sunday, but crews were working early in the evening to restore power on Marrowstone Island.

There were about 684 Jefferson PUD customers still without power at 3 p.m. as crews worked on eight outages.

Efforts to reach Jefferson PUD were unsuccessful.

Clallam County PUD reported outages in the Diamond Point, Clallam Bay and Sekiu areas.

A Bonneville Power Administration line was open and power was out to the West End, with outages also near Lairds Corner and in other areas, according to Clallam PUD.

At 2:51 p.m. Sunday, Clallam PUD reported it would take a couple hours for a BPA crew to arrive and begin patrolling transmission lines.

“Power may be out to the West End for several hours,” the update stated. PUD crews were working to restore power in the Sekiu and Clallam Bay areas in the meantime.

Efforts to reach Clallam PUD were unsuccessful.

State Highway 112 was blocked Sunday afternoon after trees fell near milepost 47, according to the state Department of Transportation. The road was blocked at about 4:06 p.m. “until further notice.”
