FORKS — Starting next year, students across the state can log on, learn and get a diploma through a new online high school based out of the Quillayute Valley School District.
The district has entered into an agreement with the Oregon-based online learning company, Insight Schools, to create Washington’s first publicly funded online high school.
A bill passed by the state Legislature in 2005 made it possible for such a school to exist, and Quillayute Valley Schools Superintendent Frank Walter said the district is excited to see it happen in Forks.
“This effort is consistent with the district’s history of embracing online learning to serve students with many different needs,” he said.
The district has received national recognition for its current Virtual High School program linking classes at Forks High School to those around the country, creating a national online learning network for students and teachers.
Keith Oelrich, founder and CEO of Insight Schools, said the Quillayute Valley district’s forward thinking in online learning was a major reason why Insight approached the district about starting the school.
