Fires at two Port Angeles homes under investigation

PORT ANGELES — Two homes suffered heavy smoke damage, causing the occupants of at least one residence to be homeless, after Port Angeles firefighters quickly extinguished fires in them on Saturday.

The blazes were at 2:23 p.m. at 2608 S. Washington St. and at 11:48 p.m. in the Welcome Inn RV Park at 1215 U.S. Highway 101. Both were limited to the contents of the homes, said Capt. Kelly Ziegler of the Port Angeles Fire Department, in a press release.

The causes of each remained under investigation Sunday.

When firefighters arrived at the afternoon fire on Washington Street, they saw smoke coming from the structure and forced entry to put out the fire before it could spread to the rest of the house, Ziegler said.

No one was hurt, she added.

Crews inducted a search and confirmed the residence was unoccupied a the time.

The residents were provided lodging assistance by the American Red Cross.

Port Angeles Fire Department responded with 12 personnel, including two chief officers. Also responding were Olympic Ambulance, Port Angeles Police Department and Port Angeles City Light.

The nighttime fire at the trailer park appeared to be in the kitchen area, Zeigler said.

Crews fought the fire from the outside and then entered the mobile home to finish extinguishing it.

The occupant sustained a minor cut while attempting to extinguish the fire, she said, but was not in the home when firefighters arrived; there were no other injuries.

The fire department responded with 10 personnel and was assisted by Clallam County Fire District 2, as well as the Port Angeles Police Department and City Light.
