PORT ANGELES — Multiple barns were destroyed by a fire that required six agencies to extinguish, Clallam County Fire District 2 officials said.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were dispatched at 11:08 p.m. Friday to a barn fire in the 3900 block of Mount Pleasant Road. The first arriving unit found a large hay barn fully involved with flames spreading to nearby grass and outbuildings, Fire District 2 officials said.
Due to the size of the fire and exposure risks, a general alarm was requested along with mutual aid from neighboring agencies.
A limited water supply required the use of water tenders and shuttle operations from the nearest hydrant at the bottom of Mount Pleasant Road, Fire District 2 officials said. Once the water supply was established, crews worked to extinguish the fires in the primary structure and prevent further spread to adjacent buildings.
One of the structures contained black powder, creating an additional hazard for personnel, Fire District 2 officials said.
The main body of the fire was knocked down about 12:09 a.m., when firefighters transitioned into overhaul operations. Crews remained at the scene until about 3:30 a.m., and they used about 20,000 gallons of water to extinguish hot spots, Fire District 2 officials said.
Fire District 2 units included one engine, one aid unit, two tenders and two command units. The Port Angeles Fire Department responded with two engines. Clallam County Fire District 3 sent three engines and two tenders. Clallam County Fire District 4 sent one tender. Clallam County PUD and the Sheriff’s Office also responded.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Monday.
