Eight injured when van collides with embankment

FORKS — Eight people were injured, including five children, in a single-vehicle collision Sunday morning on U.S. Highway 101 between Lake Crescent and Forks.

The driver, Belarmina Pablo-Lorenzo, 19, was seriously injured and was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She was listed in satisfactory condition Monday afternoon.

Seven of the injured passengers were taken to Forks Community Hospital. All of the occupants were wearing seatbelts, according to the State Patrol.

Taken to Forks Community Hospital were two adult passengers, Cesaria Lorenzo-Perez, 35, and Alberto Pablo-Ortiz, 39, and five juveniles — an 11-month-old girl, a 3-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy.

Their conditions were not known Monday. Forks Community Hospital did not respond to a call seeking information Sunday.

According to the State Patrol, Pablo-Lorenzo was driving a Chevy Astro van east on Highway 101 about 9 a.m. when the vehicle left the roadway to the right at Riverside Road just west of the Klahowya Campground and went into a ditch.

The van climbed an embankment, hit a stump, rotated to the left and rolled onto the drivers’ side of the vehicle, with the roof hitting the embankment. The vehicle came to a stop on the driver’s side, according to the report.

The State Patrol said drugs or alcohol were not involved, but that possible charges against the driver were pending.

The cause of the collision was under investigation.
