Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival chowder cook-off to feature Graham Kerr

The “Galloping Gourmet” will judge entries of both professional and amateur chefs.

PORT ANGELES — Graham Kerr of “Galloping Gourmet” fame will preside over a chowder cook-off at the Dungeness Crab &Seafood Festival’s fourth annual Chowder Cook-off on Oct. 9.

The cook-off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be at The Gateway transit center at Front and Lincoln streets.

Teams will compete for first-place prizes in the professional and amateur categories. The chowder recipe can be seafood, a combination of seafood and other ingredients, or vegetarian.

Fees for professional cooks are $45 for the first entry and $22.50 for each additional entry.

Amateur cooks pay $20 for the first entry and $10 for each additional entry.

Applications and fees must be submitted by Friday.

Visitors can watch the chefs cooking and can taste chowders from both amateur and professional cooks beginning at noon.

Five tastes can be purchased for $10. Each $10 ticket includes one vote in the People’s Choice Award.

Kerr will judge chowders at 12:30 p.m. and present awards at 2 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the Captain Joseph House, which will be a getaway refuge for families of fallen members of the military at 1108 S. Oak St. in Port Angeles.

Buck Ellard will entertain with his traditional and original brand of country music.

Kerr was on television as the Galloping Gourmet from 1968-71.

He will chat with Crab Fest-goers while signing copies of his memoir, “Flash of Silver: The Leap that Changed my World,” from 11 a.m. to noon.

In his book, Kerr uses his life so far to illustrate how consumption habits are often formed and how these can, if taken to excess, become harmful to both individuals and to the Earth. He tells his story by comparing his life to that of a wild Pacific chinook.

At 1 p.m., visitors can gather in The Gateway pavilion for an hour of “Stories with Graham,” followed by the award presentations.

Cooks can find application materials and information at www.captain josephhousefoundation.org or www.crabfestival.org. Or they can call Tawana Borden at 360-683-3408 or Sam Coyle at 360-460-4079.

The 15th annual Dungeness Crab &Seafood Festival will take place Oct. 7-9 at Port Angeles City Pier. Hours will be from noon to 10 p.m. Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 8 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 9.

Admission will be free.
