SEQUIM — Charges are unlikely in a U.S. Highway 101 collision Sunday that claimed the life of a motorcyclist who swerved to avoid a runaway tire.
Mechanical failure was to blame for the bizarre Mother’s Day collision that killed Jonathan Todd Boyd, 39, of Issaquah, Washington State Patrol Lt. Clint Casebolt said Tuesday.
Investigators believe a 1992 Chevrolet pickup traveling eastbound lost its left front tire near Happy Valley Road just east of Sequim.
Boyd was traveling westbound on a 2005 Kawasaki 1600 motorcycle, and was struck by the tire, the State Patrol said.
At the same time, he crossed the centerline to avoid the tire and the motorcycle collided head-on with a 1998 Jeep Cherokee.
Boyd died immediately, the State Patrol reported.
