Crews hampered by lack of roads in Crescent Beach wildfire

JOYCE — A controlled burn north of Joyce turned into the season’s first uncontrolled wildfire Wednesday afternoon.

It wasn’t large — the fire burned about five acres of mostly undeveloped land between Whiskey Creek Beach Road and Crescent Beach Road, about a mile north of Joyce — but it did momentarily threaten a structure and caused authorities to consider evacuating other homes.

The fire did not spread to any houses and there were no injuries, officials reported.

Access to the blaze was difficult because of a lack of roads.

David Cole, a spokesman for the state Department of Natural Resources, said DNR took over command of the fire in the evening and hoped to have a trail around the blaze by midnight.

As of 9 p.m., Cole said the fire was well toward being extinguished.

“It really died down because the winds died down,” Cole said.

In addition to more than 30 firefighters from Clallam County Fire Districts No. 2, 3 and 4, 15 DNR firefighters, three crews of inmate firefighters from Olympic Corrections Center and a state Department of Resources helicopter from Olympia joined the firefight, staging on opposite sides of the blaze.

The lack of roads hindered firefighters, said Cole and District No. 4 emergency medical technician Janet McGee.
