JOYCE — Crescent School District Superintendent Doug Kubalek was listed in serious condition at a Seattle Hospital on Monday after suffering a stroke Saturday evening.
The stroke occurred at 7 p.m., a few hours after Kubalek and his wife, Linda, were honored as grand marshals of the Joyce Daze Wild Blackberry Festival parade.
Kubalek, 59, who doubles as principal of Crescent School, underwent surgery Sunday evening at Virginia Mason Medical Center to remove a blood clot and alleviate pressure on the brain, said Brent Kubalek, the superintendent’s son.
The family was told by Kubalek’s doctor that the usual side effects of a stroke are speech impairment and partial paralysis, his son said.
However, the family won’t know the extent of the stroke for a while, he said.
The Crescent School Board will hold an emergency meeting tonight at 6 in the school library, 50350 State Highway 112, Joyce, to discuss its options ahead of the start of the fall term Sept. 6, board President Tracey Grover said.
Kubalek, who was promoted to superintendent in 2004 after the retirement of Rich Wilson, kept the position of Crescent School principal that he had held for 17 years.
“It’s so difficult,” Grover said. “We’re all such close personal friends.”
The rural school district enrolls fewer than 200 students and employs about 30 people.
