PORT TOWNSEND -Jefferson County Department of Environmental Health officials hope to clean up water pollution in eastern Jefferson County through forming a Clean Water District.
If put into effect, the district would charge a fee to all property owners within it.
The fee – not a tax – would be about $18 per parcel annually if the city of Port Townsend elected to be part of the district, said Mike McNickle, director of the environmental health department.
The fee would be about $24 per parcel per year if the city were excluded.
Throughout August, environmental health officials will travel around the county giving presentations, answering questions and accepting public comments on the proposal.
In September, the three Jefferson County commissioners will consider establishing the district.
“It’s an idea we’re taking a serious look at,” said John Fischbach, county administrator.
