PORT ANGELES — The food bank’s third annual fund-raising concert Sunday helped make a difference, generating $400.50 and 14 bags of food to help the hungry in and around the city.
With 4,636 families served by the Port Angeles Food Bank during November — some more than once — every dollar donation or bag of food counts. That compares to more than 3,000 families served during the same month last year, said Mikki Saunders, food bank director for 6 1/2 years.
Performing at the concert, which drew 85 attendees at the Senior Center, were The Spring Chickens, The Marmalades, Port Angeles High School Jazz Combo, Cherry Hill and the Olympic Saxophone Quartet.
“Seems like every year it gets bigger and better,” Saunders said of the show.
Port Angeles music teacher Signe Crawford makes it all possible, said Saunders. Crawford recruits performers and three years ago started the annual food bank concert held in the Port Angeles Senior Services and Community Center, 328 E. 7th St.
“Money goes to our food bank and for food, our expenses and insurance for the van and maintenance for the van,” Saunders said.
Saunders said November is typically a busy month for the food bank at 402 S. Valley St., which normally serves 800-900 families a month.
Besides Port Angeles, Saunders said the food bank also helps families from Neah Bay, Forks, Joyce and Sequim, when the need arises and can be met.
