Chimacum man arrested for firing gun during dispute

66-year-old charged with assault, reckless endangerment

CHIMACUM — A Chimacum man has been arrested for threatening a neighbor with a gun and firing two shots into the ground before he was incapacitated by law enforcement using stun guns.

Arnor Steven Aurdal, 66, was arrested Friday evening for investigation of two counts of reckless endangerment, one count of felony harassment and one count of first-degree assault.

Aurdal appeared in Jefferson County Superior Court on Monday and had his bail set at $500,000; a no-contact order for the victim and his wife, restrictions on possessing deadly weapons including firearms and an order not to consume any non-prescription drugs or alcohol. His arraignment will be at 9 a.m. Friday.

In a statement Saturday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies had responded to a disturbance in the vicinity of Beckett Point Road involving a neighbor dispute where one person had allegedly brandished a handgun and fired twice into the ground. According to the neighbor who made the report, Aurdal left in a vehicle with his wife and had threatened that he would return with a shotgun.

Deputies stopped the vehicle, being driven by Aurdal’s wife, and conducted a high-risk stop.

“Despite repeated commands from deputies, the suspect, identified as a 65-year-old resident of Chimacum, failed to comply and instead expressed a desire for law enforcement to use lethal force on him,” the statement said. “Subsequently, after multiple (stun gun) deployments, the individual was taken into custody.”

The statement listed Aurdal’s age as 65, but court documents list his age as 66.

Detective Sgt. Brett Anglin said it took three stun gun applications before Aurdal was taken into custody.

“That’s not uncommon for people under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Anglin said.

The confrontation between Aurdal and the victim was recorded on a private security camera attached to a home, Anglin said, and deputies reviewed it.

“The suspect discharged two rounds at the victim before the victim struck the suspect in the jaw, dropped him to the ground, and disarmed him,” the statement said. “The victim then gained possession of the firearm.”

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Holly McKeen said the dispute between Aurdal and the neighbor was over a boundary line between two properties. The sheriff’s office statement said the conflict between the neighbors has been going on for about six years.
