Candidates file on fourth day of filing week

A fourth day of candidate filings led to a primary race forming in the Port Townsend School District while three primary races have emerged in the Sequim School District.

The filing period for elected offices ends at 4 p.m. Friday.

Primary races are conducted when there are three or more candidates who are running for the same position. The primary this year is on Aug. 1. The top two voter-getters in a primary election go on to compete in the general election, which will be Nov. 7.

Hunter Gilliam filed on Thursday for Sequim School Board Position 5, after incumbent Michael Rocha and challenger Sandra Kellso filed on Monday. That created a primary contest. Two other primary contests were formed earlier in the week, with Larry Jeffryes, John Shepherd and John Graham filing for Position 1 and incumbent Maren Halvorsen, Derek Huntington and Dean Christian filing for Position 4.

Port Townsend School District incumbent Nathanael O’Hara filed for re-election to Position 5 on Thursday. On Monday, Timothy Hawley and Shasta Berg had filed for the seat.

Kathy Downer filed Thursday to challenge incumbent William Armacost for the Position 1 seat on the Sequim City Council.

Armacost had filed for re-election on Monday.

The City of Port Angeles had its first two general election contests take shape with Jim Bennett filing on Wednesday night to challenge incumbent Navarra Carr for her Position 6 seat, and Deputy Mayor Brendan Meyer, who filed Wednesday, will be challenged for his Position 7 seat by Kalli Mae Jones, who filed on Thursday.

Jim Haguewood also filed on Thursday to run for Position 5 on the Port Angeles City Council. The position is currently held by Charlie McCaughan, who had not filed for re-election as of Thursday afternoon.

A general election race in the Quilcene School District will determine who takes the Position 1 seat. Trish Freiberg holds the seat now. Ronald Jones filed on Wednesday night and will run against Ron Frantz for the position.

Leanne Ellis filed on Thursday to run for re-election for the Cape Flattery School District Position 5.
